Definition
The port where cargo is unloaded from the vessel, ending the main ocean leg.
The port of discharge is where the container is taken off the vessel at destination, after which it moves to the terminal yard for clearance and onward delivery. It is named on the bill of lading and drives destination local charges.
Where the goods continue inland, the POD may differ from the final place of delivery shown on a through or multimodal bill. Arrival, demurrage, and detention clocks at the POD make prompt clearance there critical.
