Definition
A container with a removable tarpaulin roof, allowing top loading by crane for tall cargo.
An open top container has standard walls but an open roof covered by a removable tarpaulin and bows. This lets tall cargo be craned in from above or loaded to a height that exceeds the door opening.
It suits machinery, glass, timber, and project cargo that cannot be loaded through the doors. Cargo protruding above the rails is treated as out-of-gauge, and weather protection depends on correctly fitting the tarpaulin.
