Definition
A container with collapsible or fixed end walls and no sides or roof, for over-width or heavy cargo.
A flat rack has a reinforced floor and end walls but no side walls or roof, letting cargo be loaded from the side or top and overhang the standard envelope. It is used for machinery, vehicles, pipes, boats, and other out-of-gauge pieces.
Because the cargo is exposed, it must be lashed and secured to the rack, and over-dimensional loads attract out-of-gauge surcharges. Flat racks are quoted and handled differently from standard FCL.
