Definition
A licensed specialist who clears goods through customs on behalf of importers and exporters.
A customs broker is authorized by the customs authority to prepare and lodge declarations, classify goods, calculate and pay duties and taxes, and liaise with customs to secure release. The role demands deep knowledge of tariff, valuation, and regulatory rules.
Many freight forwarders provide brokerage in-house or partner with brokers, since clearance is a critical, error-sensitive step. A good broker protects the importer from penalties, overpayment, and delays at the border.
