Definition
An ocean shipment too small to justify a full container, consolidated with other cargo into one box.
With LCL (also called groupage), a forwarder combines several shippers’ cargo into one container, then deconsolidates it at destination. The shipper pays by volume (CBM) or chargeable weight, whichever is greater.
LCL suits smaller shipments but adds consolidation handling, longer transit, and more documentation touchpoints than FCL.
